This statement deals with electonegativity.

Before you go on, you should find and read the statement in your copy of the syllabus.

Electronegativity

Electronegativity is one of the key concepts in chemistry, and so you should spend some time making sure that you fully understand it - what it means, what causes electronegativity differences, and what effects it has.

To do that, first read the page about electronegativity in the bonding section of Chemguide. Ignore the bit below the red warning note.

When you are sure that you understand that page, follow the link at the bottom of that page to look at it all again in an organic chemistry context. Read that second page down to, and including, "Bond polarity and inductive effects". Read the rest of the page for interest if you want to, but you will meet this later on when it will have more meaning to you.

If you are near the beginning of your course, you can ignore the references in the statement to 9.1(j) and 10.6(c) for now. You will meet these again later on, and will just find them confusing at the moment.
