Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry Learning outcome 2(i) This statement deals with first ionisation energy and electron affinity and the way ionisation energy varies across and down the Periodic Table. You won't be examined on electron affinity until the end of a two year course. Before you go on, you should find and read the statement in your copy of the syllabus. Ionisation energy You will find everything that you need to know about ionisation energy on the page about first ionisation energy. You will find this really difficult if you aren't already confident about electronic structures using s and p notation. Don't even think about looking at this page until you are happy about that. Electron affinity You will find what you need on the page about electron affinity. Notice that this is in bold type in the syllabus, and so won't be examined until the end of a two year course.
