Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry Learning outcome 2(b) This statement deals with what happens to protons, neutrons and electrons in electric fields. Before you go on, you should find and read the statement in your copy of the syllabus. You will this discussed near the beginning of the page which explores a simple view of atomic structure. On that page, you will find that I have given two different versions of what happens depending on whether the beams of different particles have the same energy or the same speed. At the time of writing (July 2013), it isn't clear which of these CIE want. There was only one multiple choice question on this topic up to that point, and it gave diagrams suggesting (but without saying so) that the beams were of equal energy. However, I have discussed this with someone at CIE, who thought it was more appropriate to use the curves for equal speeds. I will update this as soon as I am more certain which version they want.
