Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry

Learning outcome 10.6(h)

This statement is about the hydrolysis of esters.

Before you go on, you should find and read the statement in your copy of the syllabus.

You will find everything you need on the page about the hydrolysis of esters. Ignore the bit about soap making.

Make sure that you understand how what you get relates to the structure of the original ester. In other words, be sure that you know how the ester splits, and which alcohol and which carboxylic acid is formed.

If you aren't absolutely sure about this, perhaps you should go back and read the first bit of the introduction to esters page again. On that page, the bits in red end up in the alcohol, and the bits in blue in the carboxylic acid.
